Dan Zimmerman wasn’t going to let a stroke, and the ensuing diagnosis that he would be wheelchair bound and never talk again, keep him down.

The 52-year-old Phoenix, Arizona resident shared the story of his impressive recovery, that has included three cross-country trike rides spanning thousands of miles, as a featured speaker during the second annual Stroke Survivor Congress, held in Chatham on Friday.

“It takes a lot of work,” he said of fighting back from the stroke he suffered at at age 41.

“I beat it, barely,” he added.

Lifestyle choices, such as poor diet, lack of exercise and bad habits such as smoking or drink in excess, can cause some people to suffer stroke.
