Description of Cardiac Services

The cardiac surgical service provides adult care to the Central West health region of Ontario, with a population of roughly two million people. The entire range of adult cardiac surgical services is provided, with the exception of congenital cases. The cardiac surgeons also provide service to the population of the Northwestern Ontario health region and attend monthly out-patient clinics in Thunder Bay.

Diagnostic cardiac catheterization, coronary interventional techniques and mitral balloon valvuloplasty are carried out at the designated regional centre for cardiovascular disease, which is the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation - General Campus. A Pacemaker Program is also situated at the General Campus, which is a regional facility catering to complex pacemaker cases.

Rouge Valley Health System (Centenary), Scarborough

  • State-of-the-art non-invasive diagnostics, including nuclear cardiology, stress testing, colour/doppler echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, stress echo, Holter monitoring, event records and tilt-table testing
  • Critical cardiac care management in a 12-bed coronary care unit (CCU) and 14-bed intensive care unit (ICU)
  • On November 14, 2001, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care announced an angioplasty program for the hospital. Subject to Rouge Valley's meeting the clinical requirements, the program is expected to move forward by the spring of 2002, according to the announcement.

The centre also provides regional continuing medical education (CME), with weekly cardiac care rounds on Tuesday mornings and an annual "Excellence in Cardiac Care workshop" held each May.

Both sites of the Rouge Valley Health System are very active in clinical research, having achieved national and international recognition for trial participation and original research.

Toronto East General is Ontario's 17th -- and newest -- advanced cardiac centre for adult care. Its diagnostic cardiac catheterization program commenced operations in December 2001. A Regional Cardiac Care Coordinator at the hospital (see below) is available to help referring physicians and patients access services.

The Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art digital angiography equipment, one of the world's most advanced cardiovascular x-ray imaging systems. The Innova 2000 from GE Medical Systems enables cardiologists to view the heart and hard-to-see blood vessels with exceptional clarity and significantly less radiation to the patient and staff.

Toronto East General anticipates treating 1,000 to 1,500 patients per year. The new catheterization lab means that TEGH can respond to the immediate demands of its community by providing access to this much-needed service, closer to home.
