Released annually by the Ontario Stroke Network (OSN) and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), this year’s Ontario Stroke Evaluation Report examines the variation in care by stroke care sectors from 2003/04 to 2011/12. Sectors include secondary stroke prevention and care, emergency department care, acute inpatient care, inpatient rehabilitation, complex continuing care and home care services.

Report highlights (only pertain to stroke prevention centres):

  • Less than half (47 per cent) of urgent patients are seen within a week of referral for stroke, and only 14 per cent are seen within the critical 72-hour period following stroke.
  • There have been marked improvements in rates of secondary prevention care following the establishment of secondary prevention clinics:
    • 94 per cent of stroke patients have the required brain imaging and 84 per cent undergo imaging of the carotid artery;
    • 80 per cent of stroke patients with atrial fibrillation have anticoagulant therapy prescribed or recommended.
  • Less than 2 per cent of patients referred to secondary stroke prevention clinics are re-admitted to hospital for stroke within 30 days, compared to 5 per cent prior to the establishment of these clinics.
  • For patients seen at secondary stroke prevention clinics, the median time to carotid revascularization exceeds the best practice target of 14 days.

Also included with the report are the Ontario stroke report cards, first introduced by the OSN in 2011. The report cards grade the delivery of stroke care for each of Ontario’s 14 Local Health Integration Networks.
